Introduction
English Literature at A-Level enables students to develop an understanding of literary texts of different genres from Shakespeare to the present day. At AS, the concept of Narrative is explored through a selection of poems and novels, while a dramatic genre is the focus of the coursework. We study six texts at AS level. For those continuing with the subject to A2, you will have the opportunity to explore at least a further six texts in examining the Gothic genre through drama and prose, and engaging in Wider and Independent Reading for coursework.
This course is suitable for students who have good analytical and written skills. We expect students to be involved in class and group discussions and prepared to test out their own opinions and ideas while listening to others.

Subjects that link particularly well with this course are any essay-based subjects. (e.g. Law, Psychology, Philosophy, Film, History, Sociology). We particularly recommend that students taking English Literature should also consider English Language. The skills are complementary and it would be particularly useful if you are considering a degree in English.
Trips/visits are organised to theatres, study days, and literary places of interest. Students need to be committed to literature and to enjoy reading on a regular basis. To be successful in this course, students should feel confident in their ability to write clear, well structured essays.
Progression Options
Students thinking about English at University are strongly advised to take both English Language and English Literature as separate subjects.
As part of a wider programme the course provides an excellent basis for progression to any career or university course. English Literature will support a career in a wide range of areas, including Law, Journalism, Teaching, Advertising and Marketing, Local Government and Civil Service and any career in which communication is important. The skills developed in this course are valued by virtually any university admissions tutor or employer.
