King Edward VI College will be starting three new Sports Academies from September. The College is to run Football, Rugby and Cricket academies for 16 – 19 year olds in partnership with Nuneaton Town FC, Nuneaton Rugby Club and Nuneaton Cricket Club.
Now that the Sports Academies have been confirmed for September, the college and the partnership clubs will be holding trials for all the students who have applied.
The first trials will be for the Football Academy on Wed July 4th where staff and coaches from both KEC and Nuneaton Town FC will be looking at all aspects of the students play as well as discussing their academic course options.
This exciting opportunity is available to all 16 – 19 year olds who are students at the college. They will receive high quality coaching from Nuneaton Town coaches, lead by Steve Farmer throughout the week.
In addition to regular coaching and matches, the students will also undertake FA qualification courses in coaching and officiating as well as the Community Sports Leaders Award and First Aid.
With the dispansion of Nuneaton Town FC youth teams, the new academy partnership will provide a pathway into the first team and local men’s league football.
Students will also play each Wednesday afternoon in the British College’s Leagues and Cups as well as have the chance to progress further within the Nuneaton Town FC set up.
Nuneaton Town Chairman Ian Neale said “As part of ongoing Community Foundation work, linking up with KEC provides a perfect partnering arrangement to continue and reach out and offer opportunities to young people in the area.”
For students in the Rugby Academy, coaching will come from Nuns coaches including Mike Umaga and Huw Thomas. The 1st team will continue to play home matches at Old Ed’s, bringing together the whole youth Rugby community in the town and surrounding areas.
As well as Nuneaton Cricket Club and Bedworth Cricket Club supporting the College Cricket Academy, ‘Bounce’ indoor cricket centre ensures that the regular coaching sessions will continue throughout the year. Warwickshire Cricket Club coaches will be honing the student’s technique at the superb facilities.
In addition to these practically based academies, KEC will be introducing BTEC Sport to next September’s academic programme alongside the existing AS and A-Level PE courses.
The college PE and Sport co-ordinator James Barton said “The staff and coaches are looking forward to the trials and meeting the future academy students. The launch of the academies should provide an exciting opportunity for all involved”
Anyone interested in joining any of the Sports Academies are still able to do so and should contact the college.
